Code of Conduct for Affiliates Using Browser Extensions and Other Client Software
Industry-wide standards for fair attribution, transparency, and consumer protection. Created by James Little and Ben Edelman.
Why This Code of Conduct?
The Problem
Recent investigations — including widely-viewed coverage of practices by companies like Honey and others — have highlighted how some browser extensions and client-side software intercept affiliate attribution in ways that are unfair to publishers, misleading to consumers, and harmful to the integrity of the affiliate channel.
The Solution
This Code of Conduct establishes clear, enforceable standards that all affiliate networks can adopt. It covers installation disclosures, user consent, stand-down obligations, attribution fairness, and transparency requirements — creating a level playing field for everyone.
Key Objectives
Protect User Intent
Ensure affiliate links are only invoked through genuine, deliberate user actions.
Fair Attribution
Prevent unfair interference with tracking and payment through clear stand-down rules.
Standardise Rules
Create consistent standards across all affiliate networks, not a patchwork of policies.
Transparency
Require full disclosure of software functionality, trigger logic, and cookie behaviour.
Auditability
Enable effective testing and auditing with no concealment or differential behaviour.
Industry Trust
Build confidence between networks, advertisers, publishers, and consumers.
